Six clubs where Mbappe could move this summer
Monday, 26 June 2017
This time last year, few European football fans would have heard of Kylian Mbappe, but the young Frenchman is currently the name on everyone's lips.
A string of outstanding performances this campaign from the 18-year-old led AS Monaco to the Ligue 1 title and the semi-final of the Champions League, where they were eventually eliminated by Juventus. As Leonardo Jardim's outfit won the French top-flight, their teenager scored 15 goals and registered eight assists in 29 appearances.
A host of Europe's elite clubs have registered their interest in him, so here we look at the candidates:
REAL MADRID
The Primera Division and Champions League winners are typically on the lookout for another 'Galactico' this summer and have identified Mbappe as their main target. Look through some of the Frenchman's photos from his childhood and you will see an array of Blancos kits and posters stuck to his bedroom wall, so this would likely be a dream move.
The forward is particulary enamoured with Cristiano Ronaldo and has spoke of how much he admires the Ballon d'Or winner, even citing him as a childhood idol. However, the Portuguese superstar is reportedly unsettled in the Spanish capital to the intense media scrutiny he has faced under allegations of alleged unpaid tax payments ranging from 2011 to 204. Mbappe could be viewed as a short or long-term replacement for CR7, and has apparently met with chairman, Florentino Perez, to discuss his future. Zinedine Zidane, meanwhile, remains a massive fan of his compatriot.
LIVERPOOL
Liverpool remain one of the most successful sides in the history of European football and although they have been in and out of the Champions League in recent seasons, they will feature in the competition next campaign.
The Reds remain outsiders to land Mbappe, but the prospect of working with Jurgen Klopp, who has a reputation for getting the best out of youngsters, will certainly be taken under consideration by the 18-year-old and his representatives.
Liverpool have this week broken their transfer record to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma, but would have to, at the very least, treble the fee they paid to land the former Chelsea winger in order to claim the services of Mbappe. It remains to be seen whether they would allow the finances for such a move.
ARSENAL
Whenever a world-record fee is mooted for a player, the Gunners are never usually in the conversation due to the tight financial structure they have in place in terms of transfers and wages. However, it is believed that they would be willing to loosen the purse strings in order to land a player they believe would catapult them to the next level.
The highest Arsenal have ever paid for a player remains the £42 million required to land Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in 2013, so they would have to destroy their previous best in order to secure his services.
The Gunners do have one ace up their sleeve in the race for Mbappe, however, and that is head coach, Arsene Wenger. The veteran boss continues to have a good relationship with former club, Monaco, and is credited with bringing Thierry Henry from Monte Carlo to Highbury to make him one of the best players in the world.
Indeed, this week one of Mbappe's relatives claimed that Wenger is a 'great man' and that the player would consider working alongside him.
MANCHESTER CITY
If anyone has the financial might to make this move happen it is certainly Manchester City, who have splashed the cash since their lucrative takeover nearly a decade ago. The Citizens have already did business with Monaco this summer, having paid £46 million to land one of the best players in Europe last season in Bernardo Silva, which means the infrastructure is in place at both clubs to keep the business relationship going.
Money will not be an issue, but Mbappe has not given any signal whatsoever that he would be interested in moving to the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola remains one of the most talented coaches in the world and the prospect of working with him to improve and become one of the best may indeed be attractive to the Frenchman, however.
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Another side who will not have any financial doubts about the deal. PSG have bossed French football since their own lucrative takeover a few years ago but this season they were usurped by the youthful exuberance of AS Monaco, who were led by Mbappe to the Ligue 1 title.
It is natural for the Parisiens to be interested in one of the players of the season who put them to the sword in order to strengthen themselves as well as drastically weaken their biggest domestic rivals.
If recent reports are to be believed, Unai Emery's outfit have already tabled a world-record bid of £119 million in order to land Mbappe, who was born in Paris and also still has the majority of his family living there. No response has come from Monaco, but they will be concerned that their player once called PSG an 'interesting project'.
