It has been a hugely successful calendar year for Cristiano Ronaldo, having claimed the European Championships with Portugal and the Spanish Primera Division and Champions League titles with Real Madrid, but in domestic action what other players make the grade alongside him in the best XI of the Liga season...

At the end of every football campaign, one of the most controversial publications made by media outlets is their choice of 'Team of the Season' or which players they believe have been the best in their position over the 38 fixtures. In Spain, with Real Madrid and Barcelona fans in particular fiercely defensive of their heroes on the pitch, any omissions can certainly catalyse debate.

For the Spanish Primera Division, it really goes without saying that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are going to make the grade, but how many of their team-mates, and how many from the other 18 teams, have earned their place?

Who makes the cut?

As usual, Barca and Madrid dominate the starting XI with four coming from the former and five coming from the latter. Making up the line-up is Sergio Asenjo of Villarreal in goal while Yeray Alvarez of Athletic Club comes in alongside Sergio Ramos at centre-back.

Even with the Clasico duo being well-represented, there are still some players who will feel aggrieved at their lack of recognition. Isco and Luka Modric of Real Madrid have had a fine season, while Neymar will always be in with a shout for Barcelona - even if he did save his best performances for the Champions League in still of domestic duties.
