The end of an era for Jorge Mendes?

The end of an era for Jorge Mendes?

Thursday, 13 July 2017

The Portuguese super-agent has been at the pinnacle of footballer representation for well over a decade and for the majority of that time Real Madrid has been a hub of activity for his company, Gestifute, who have oversaw a plethora of transfer comings and outgoings, but now it is only Cristiano Ronaldo left from his clique of players...

This week, James Rodriguez left Real Madrid for Bayern Munich in a two-year loan deal after a fairly dismal personal season in the white of the Spanish capital club.

During the summer it is usually par for the course that there will be many comings and goings withing the squad of Los Blancos, but this latest departure signals the beginning of the end of an era in Madrid - the era of Jorge Mendes.

The 51-year-old is currently one of the most powerful men in football due to the stars he represents, and up until now, much of this power has came through his affiliation with staff and players at Real Madrid. The 2011/12 season was when he was most influential, as he oversaw the contracts of Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel di Maria, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Ricardo Carvalho, and manager, Jose Mourinho.

James eventually became part of the crew, but now that he has departed it is only CR7 that remains from the Mendes era.

The Ballon d'Or winner is clearly Mendes' biggest and most important client, but is declining influence in the biggest club in the world will be a source for frustration and worry, even if there has been no suggestion of ill-feeling between the two parties.

Indeed, his relationship with the Champions League winners may completely come to an end if recent reports are to be believed which claim Ronaldo is ready to leave the club after becoming unhappy with life in Spain due to the media scrutiny surrounding his alleged unpaid tax payments.

Naturally, Mendes will benefit financially if the 32-year-old leaves, but is it worth giving up influence at the world's biggest club?

I did already.
