Madrid chairman: Ronaldo situation is strange

Madrid chairman: Ronaldo situation is strange

Thursday, 13 July 2017

The Ballon d'Or winner has enjoyed an incredibly successful calendar year in which he has claimed the European Championships with Portugal and the Spanish Primera Division and Champions League titles with Real Madrid, but even with these accolades the 32-year-old has confessed that he is currently not happy with life in the Spanish capital...

Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez has conceded that the situation regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's request to leave the European champions is "very strange."

The Portuguese superstar is currently unsettled with life at the Santiago Bernabeu with the Spanish inland revenue investigating him for alleged unpaid tax payments over three years from 2011 to 2014. If recent reports are to be believed, Ronaldo is concerned that Real Madrid have not supported him with the required ferocity to play down the allegations, but Perez is confident of keeping his star man even if he does not understand the full situation.

"Ronaldo is a Madrid player, we’re delighted with him, [but] there was a story in the paper that said he was annoyed with the treatment given to his tax issue. I think the best thing for him and Madrid is for him to stay: we’ll see what happens," the chairman told the media recently.

"I will speak to him and let’s see what he has to say. We all have to fulfil our duty to Hacienda (inland revenue). We have complete confidence that he has always wanted to fulfil his fiscal duties. His lawyers, Baker & McKenzie, say he has the same structure in place as when he was in England.

"Right now, Cristiano is a Real Madrid player and something very strange would have to happen for him not to be, and I am not [even] contemplating that.”

The 32-year-old has been linked with former club, Manchester United, as well as a potential move to Major League Soccer or Paris Saint-Germain, but Perez also confirmed to reporters that he had received no offers and had not spoken to any suitors regarding a bid.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone at all,” he said. I’m a friend of Nasser [Al-Khelaifi - PSG president] and I have not spoken to him, or anyone. No one has sent us an offer, for him [Ronaldo] or Morata, or James. No one.

The 70-year-old brought Ronaldo to the club back in 2009 along with the likes of Karim Benzema, Xabi Alonso, and Kaka, and has always enjoyed a positive relationship with his talisman due to the success on the pitch which has been shared between the pair. It is clear that he wants CR7 to stay with Madrid, even if he cannot confirm his playing future at the moment.

“I don’t have a solution [yet]. All I can say right now is that Cristiano Ronaldo, like all players who have a contract, is a Real Madrid player. Whatever happened – and something has happened that has affected his credibility for sure – he will tell us and we will see what has happened. No one has said anything. I’ve read what you have read, and I don’t think it’s convenient to read too much into that. Things happen and you look for the best solution for everyone.”

“The last time I was with Cristiano was in Cardiff. We were talking normally, he was delighted, he was enthusiastic, we talked about next season, he was normal, looking forward to it.

“Everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and Cristiano even more so. I see some of the things that are said in the media and it hurts me and I have nothing to do with it. He does important things socially: he is a person of solidarity.

I did already.
